Saxon in the sunshine...
I wanted to get some better photos of Saxon now it's finished, hopefully to go alongside a nice article in Narrow Gauge World at some point. Since the photos I took the other night were taken indoors, and didn't do the finish any justice, I thought I'd share a few here anyway...
The model, if it's the first time you've seen it, is based on the Worsley Works 'scratch aid' kit. The neat etched brass parts create a basic body and chassis, but you then need to add the handrails on the body, and all the underframe detailing (axle boxes, dampers, sand boxes, brake bits). I used styrene in the main. It is finished with a Halfords plastic primer, then airbrushed final coats of custom mixed enamel paint (mainly Humbrol with a touch of Railmatch provincial blue for the main body). The weathering is three steps - washes (Humbrol 98 and 33) on the body and chassis, dry brushing of the edges that would wear through to bear metal with Humbrol gun-metal 53, and then various shades (lighter over the roof and bonnet, darker on the chassis, then exhaust staining) airbrushed over, again mainly Humbrol 33, 98 and then a tan colour that I can't recall the number of! The finishing touches are the lovely custom etched nickel silver works and name plates from Steve at Narrow Planet - drop him an email for your requirements, no link other than a very satisfied customer!
