Heywood top wagon: second prototypes...

The second prototype prints have arrived for Heywood top wagon in 006.5 (Minimum gauge modelling in 4mm scale, using Busch HOf track and locomotive mechanisms)...

These models are tiny - just 12mm wide and 24mm long - but despite their small size have printed cleanly with even the tiny bolt head detail visible on the axle boxes. They are designed to be sold in packs of five when we market them under the 6point5 brand through Narrow Planet, and will come with wheels and magnets...
Magnets?? I hear you ask...
Yes small N50 magnets from China! These are 2mm diameter and 1mm thick and are the same size as the Busch magnets used on their locomotives. It does mean everything needs to be orientated one way to couple up, but this isn't too restrictive on a small layout.
The wagon is made up of 3 parts, a chassis with axle boxes, a floor with buffer beams, coupling mounts and locating lugs, and the wagon 'top' with pre-formed holes for the handrails.
These fit together very quickly, and the wagons are snap fit and roll freely. The design is such that you can stack two tops on top of each other to build a deeper wagon. We envisage the packs will come with 5 wagon tops, so you could have a couple of flat wagons and a couple of deeper wagons.
Now the print parts have been finalised, there are a few small etched parts needed - which will be designed in the next week or so and ordered to test assembly - these will be small number plates for each wagon and corner braces for the wagon tops.
To get a feel for just how tiny these wagons are, here they are with a Sand Hutton wagon (mounted on a Busch skip chassis) - also a forthcoming Narrow Planet model, designed by a friend and fellow modeller Mark Greenwood.
Finally, a collection of my 006.5 models - the Heywood wagons look great behind my 0-4-0 tank engine, and will work well with the 6point5 models Ruston Proctor diesel kit that I designed and we released a few months ago. Watch this space for more developments and hopefully in the Autumn I'll start work on designing a steam loco body kit for the Busch chassis (which will be neither a Heywood or Hunslet). More soon...
