On video: Denton Road layout tour…
It was October last year when I first shared the concept behind Denton Road. A passion project, as well as a fresh challenge - could you build a realistic urban railway environment in such a small footprint?

I’ve shared the journey on the blog over the past 12 months - and now, with the layout complete and some time on my hands I’ve finally, finally sat down to create a video that attempts to both do it justice and explain the concept and passion that are such intrinsic elements in its success.
Why has it taken so long? Perhaps I’ve been putting this off, as it’s a marker of completion, one I didn’t want to face - for the project has been a wonderful use and sanctuary at times this year…
So here we are, a 30 minute reflection interspersed with trains running - models that don’t get a lot of use so excuse their haphazard performance. A lot of the time I enjoy the model ‘stationary’. A Christmas present, perhaps, to those avid followers of the blog, posted here at the same time as going live on YouTube. Enjoy, share with friends, comment and encourage others to have a go, to make something personal in 2026… and if they need a helping hand, then I suggest ‘The Art of Railway Modelling’ is still a great place to start, and my own favourite of the books.
Alongside filming this I’ve managed to make a meaningful start on redecorating the kitchen - so a productive week off work so far! Until next time, more soon…

I love writing and creating material for the blog. If you enjoy what you read and engage with I would be appreciative of any donation, large or small, to help me keep it advert and restriction free. Alternatively, feel free to buy me a coffee.

Hi James, I've just enjoyed the video; a really lovely execution of a great idea. I then went back to the Inkerman article in MRJ Compendium No. 2; a terrific piece but what a shame we don't have the photos in colour. Still, even in b/w they are so good. I can see why you were inspired. Very best, Jonathan
ReplyDeleteThank you Jonathan, lovely to hear from you. Glad to have encouraged you to return to MRJ Compendium 2, I haven’t looked at mine in a while but I love it - definitely my favourite of the trilogy.
DeleteReally enjoyed the visit to Denton Road. Another great example of your artistic approach to this hobby, sugestive and restrained. A perfect place to escape too.
ReplyDeleteThanks Stephen. I like the way you’ve put that, definitely restrained - but suggestive! Yes. Each element is considered. The story told through the space for us to find out own memories in the scene…
DeleteHi James, that was a treat, really enjoyed absorbing Denton Road so subtle, says so much in a small space and the lighting is so clever.
DeleteThank you.
All the very best for Christmas.
Eric
