Train time…
There is something curious that distinguishes a journey taken by car, or by train. I enjoy a long drive, an adventure. Time to think as your hands and brain are occupied with the task of keeping that rolling death trap on four wheels…
Trains though are different, train time. Nothing to occupy our hands, our conscious and unconscious minds perhaps closer as a result? Houses, fields, the world; it all passes by the window and we take it in. Snippets of the conversation of strangers, the vibration of a track joint or buffeting with a passing train. Quiet in mind and body, even if the carriage isn’t.
For me, a selfish opportunity to reflect and recharge. My love of railways an additional layer of balm, soothing it all and I arrive a little better than I departed. A journey to rediscover a little piece of who I am and what I can be…

Well said James. (I was a self employed driving instructor back in 2003 for a short time and the enjoyment of seeing someone go from that first lesson to test day was wonderful and yet that potential death trap scenario didn't sit right with me)
ReplyDeleteThings have certainly improved hugely since TfW took over the awful Arriva Trains here in Wales. One can only hope that the railways UK wide will once again be a pleasure to travel on.
It sounds like your journey went well. Best wishes
Thank you Roger, I’m glad you enjoyed the writing, I was quite pleased with it - funnily enough it was quite the journey, but that can wait for another day.
