I love old magazines. Produced without expectation of a long life, despite this examples cling on well past their use by date. In the case of ‘Rail’ (other titles also available) its news and traction review now offer a snapshot of time captured in relative detail, long before the internet forums and social media…

Whilst my Hornby ‘125 Train Pack’ was unrealistic it is nothing compared to this… who would have thought a single HST power car would, or even could have been used in this manner. Through the pages of old Rail magazines, bought now for more than their cover price but still just pocket money, I’m enjoying glimpses of a time before exams, girls, relationships, family and mortgages. Oh, for a Time Machine…

There was some good magazines in the past. Well written in-depth articles. Feels in some respects a lost art or an art over taken by technology and changes in society. My personal favourite is Motive Power Monthly. Only lasted from 1986-1991.
