Compared: Rat face off…

With a Sutton Sulzer Type 2 on the bench recently I had the opportunity to compare it directly with a new tooling Bachmann example. So with an almost mythical existence, does the Sutton model match the hype?

Bachmann (left) vs Sutton (right)

The short answer is, it is lovely.

The Sutton model is nicer… finer details, more detail. The MU hose for example above, beautifully rendered. The etched grills are nicer and finer as is some of the detail through the grilles. The Bachmann model is much more robustly constructed and the body removal much much simpler and easier.

The same? General body shape and general detail are about the same. BR blue both good. Yellow richer on Bachmann. Glazing, prismatic effect on both…

Similar detail. Finer on Sutton (right) but of a more robust and apparent quality on Bachmann (left),

It was a great opportunity - a real pleasure of my job to be able to see these things first hand, and a sign of the times that these two lovely models can exist together and thrive. The ability to open a box and enjoy this quality is a real boon to the hobby, these high end details do, over time, filter down and out across other manufacturers and ranges.

Until next time, more soon…
