First steps and fond memories…
In 2014 I made my first tentative steps in 009 and designed my first kit, the Narrow Planet O&K...

| My first 009 model, my first kit design, the Narrow Planet O&K using the wonderful Minitrains chassis. |
Back then the scale was one of the kit and scratch builder. My good friend Tim had bewitched me with the marvellous ‘Grindley Brook’ and I had become deeply inspired by the narrow gauge railways across the heath of Purbeck.
Looking back with rose-tinted spectacles is dangerous because although yes, the scale has been transformed by ready to run models and resin 3D prints it still has the same charm, the same potential. I have just found it harder to find. I still have some of the models from this first layout, perhaps one day I will find myself working once more in narrow gauge.
Until next time, more soon…

I love writing and creating material for the blog. If you enjoy what you read and engage with I would be appreciative of any donation, large or small, to help me keep it advert and restriction free. Alternatively, feel free to buy me a coffee.

I actually quite miss those early days of OO9 and 3D printing. I think it encouraged a different kind of modelling, and a different kind of approach than both what went before, and the current wave of RTR based layouts.
ReplyDeleteI have less fond memories of trying to fabricate clack valves.
The Cadeby layout is sat on the bookshelf behind me, denuded of both trees and stock, well other than that F&C tender loco. I could build a slightly larger version that would fill the shelf better, but it doesn't excite me. Perhaps with Apedale's Teddy Boston day coming up I should at least restore the trees and display it as a diorama.
The Simplex, Ruston and Hudson ammo wagons might find a static home on my NSR/W&U mash up, which though I've not posted about it, is actually making slow progress and just needs me to clear a table for a weekend to assemble the jigsaw.
I miss them too - I had a great time with Tim exhibiting his layout, and meeting Steve had led to my involvement with Narrow Planet. All good memories…
