Half an hour at Gobowen…

It’s half term and my son is visiting for a few days. Train spotting / watching is one of ‘things’ we do, yesterday saw an afternoon drive down to Gobowen…

Interesting with the level crossing, the semaphore signals, the branch to Oswestry, the abandoned bay platform with the remains of the coal depot unloading conveyor…

Half an hour nets us a Holyhead bound 197 from Cardiff, a Birmingham bound 158 from Holyhead and a pastry from the Co-op.

More, some interesting (and new to me) angles to photograph familiar trains. It is interesting that the 197 feel more everyday now (I do hope they do something with the suspension as ride is definitely a problem) but my word, how evocative it is to stand and listen to a 158 accelerate away from a station stop. Superb to see although they could have done with a trip through the carriage washer! Where are the 158s on the Holyhead Birmingham route serviced and cleaned?

Off out to see if the stone train is running from Penmaenmawr today, normal service will resume later in the week, until then, more soon…

  1. Cool...I really enjoyed the ½ hour or so I spent pottering around Gobowen between my train and the bus to Oswestry (for the Cambrian Heritage Railways) a few years ago and it's good to see there's still plenty of interest.
In the early 70s, I used to go chasing trains and exploring old railways with my Dad, it's one of things that shaped my interest.
Odd to think that, at the time, several of the old railways we visited had been in use less than a decade before...
I'm off to see my sister in Calne today, so will try and fit in a little train watching if the weather isn't too dire.
    Cheers,
    Simon.
