Commission: Cavalex 56 weathering…
This has been a deeply enjoyable project - and one that I had feared would be difficult, proved to be a pleasant challenge. Bringing a BR blue Class 56 to life in OO gauge...
The Cavalex donor model needs no introduction - a beautifully rendered model with fine detail in abundance, but more, the prototype captured in miniature - especially convincing are the bogies, I was really impressed with several elements but the consistency in finish and finesse really does show what China is capable of producing these days... I wonder how much you'd need to pay if we made them here in the UK? I know for sure that I would not be able to keep up this level of quality for several thousand models...
Sometimes these super detailed models are a little clinical - and in this instance, in the BR blue, very monolithic and almost dead. I decided I need to break up the soft sheen, a lovely pleasing finish - but it needed dulling down in places - especially the roof. A gentle mist of matt lacquer left to harden for a few days set things up for the weathering to follow.
This followed my usual approach - find some prototype photos, get into the prototype, understand where the dirt and wear and tear come from - and then the colour it is - and recreate this not as a photocopy, but more a way of infusing and injecting feeling into the process. Humbrol enamels, home made washes, gentle airbrushed dirt and some dry brushing brought a wonderful but soulless toy alive.
If you'd like me to take a look at your own model and work some magic, then do get in touch using the contact form or email via my Facebook page. I'd love to help and enjoy these weathering commissions a great deal. Until next time, more soon...
The model is now back safely with my customer who sent me a lovely email:
"Just a quick note to say I am in receipt of the Class 56 and the standard of weathering is absolutely superb thank you... also the lovely personal touches regarding the card and bookmark which are fabulous. Many many thanks!"
