Yesterday I travelled some trains just because I hadn’t gone from A to B by that route before. I have found in recent years I’m not really interested in collecting numbers, but the idea of collecting journeys took hold and I’ve been using a lo-fi method up until now…

It was on the Isle of Wight that my good friend Steve and I discussed ideas, and he offered to turn my ‘list’ created in Notes into a fully functional tool. What he has produced is device independent, social without being social, simple to use and rather lovely. We’ve called it Journey Log, and it’s now free for anyone to use…
Journey Log is about a creating and collecting a record, it displays stats including things like your top 5 routes and numbers. Of course it also shows all your journeys and all of the numbers, by class. It also indicates if someone else has ridden that route or number (but shares no identifying information - Journey Log is definitely not a social network). We’re developing all the time so you can make suggestions too…
The look and feel is designed to feel like paper, pen and note cards.
We have made it free.
It is the first part of our Layout Club project.

Nowadays for me it’s more about the route - any opportunity to cover lines I missed or didn’t exist when I was busy taking numbers back in the ‘blue era’.
ReplyDeleteSaturday also found me in Stoke on a very pleasant direct run from Rugby to Stockport. New mileage too - previous visits to the Potteries had always been via Crewe.
I do like the idea of this, like you it is the journey I care about, unless there is something unusual about the stock or it is a type new to me. My weekend travel from Stoke was to Silsden, which was quite interesting.
DeleteAnd having said all that, I could also see the attraction of an AI driven app that allowed for casual trainspotting, a bit like the Merlin birding app, that could identify stock from a photo and perhaps integrate it with other information.
This is why I would make a lousy agile product manager....
