The trio of ‘big Bagnall’ steam locomotives built as the British Rail were working on the Class 08. Built for Port Talbot steel works, they were modern, well built and renowned in South Wales for their power and reliability, exceeding their design expectations…
The model has been assembled from the Railway Mania kit using a Hornby Austerity/J94 donor. The etched valve gear was an option with the kit and designed by Michael Edge of Judith Edge kits - so is a rather lovely touch and not too difficult to assemble for those of us who’ve overcome the fear of weilding a soldering iron near small articulated joints!
Bodywork is just two pieces of 3D printed resin - sprinkled liberally with extra details. These were well printed and required little clean up - good design by Adam. Painting in Humbrol 20 (Crimson) gave a good base for the Railway Mania optional decals, which my customer also supplied. A Modelu crew and Light Railway Stores etched works plates complete the extra detail.
A sympathetic weathering gives life to this industrial behemoth without feeling tired and worn out - the prototype were far from it!
If you would like me to turn a ‘one day’ project to a reality today, I really enjoy the variety of prototypes and approaches I work with here. Get in touch and we can discuss your requirements and through the project I communicate and engage you in key decisions, making you feel every bit part of the build.
For now, enjoy these photos and until next time, more soon…

I love writing and creating material for the blog. If you enjoy what you read and engage with I would be appreciative of any donation, large or small, to help me keep it advert and restriction free. Alternatively, feel free to buy me a coffee.
I have driven the prototype on the Watercress Line and your model captures it perfectly. Very impressed with the results of your hard work James. Well done!
