Lucky but lonely...

I am lucky I suppose. I have a fair amount of discretionary time - and in recent years have re-discovered my childhood passion, modifying and repainting ready to run models in both HO and my new love, British N gauge...

These models begin with a photo or video, an urge to recreate something. It may be something I haven't experienced first hand, the model making as an art form, exploring and understanding my connection to the subject, a desire to create a feeling as well as a physical model; and of course, sharing this with you all.

It is a wonderful pastime - but a lonely one.

So spare a thought when you lament your own lack of progress when you're sat with a good friend, face to face, enjoying a coffee/beer and catching up - something that I'd happily swap for time at my bench.

Until next time, more soon...

  1. Morning, James. It's rewarding to work for one's self, but it can be a solitary existence. It's great to go head-down on a project, but we are social animals and sometimes need to bounce our thoughts off others, whether it's for reassurance that we're going in the right direction, or to share the strength of team thinking.
Knowing the area where you live - members of my family used to live nearby in Weston Rhyn - could I suggest that a chat with Dapol might open a door to some form of worÄ·ing relationship where both sides benefit from your physical presence on site from time to time and frees you occasionally from the confines of your workshop.
    I do wish you well.

  2. I have received a number of lovely messages by email. I appreciate everyone who engages with me through the blog or social media, but especially those who have built and nurtured digital friendships over the ether. I come here every day to share my ideas, my meanderings, my modelling... my art... because part of me seeks that engagement and discussion. It isn't entirely selfless and I thank you all for entertaining me and my many diversions.

  3. James, I can only say that I identify with all that you say - in other posts, not just this one! I don't often reply to your posts, although I know I ought to. Although the straightforward answer would be to seek out opportunities to socialise with like-minded hobbyists, sometimes one's mental state might mean that socialising ends up being a bit of a struggle to do. Your posts, I am sure - through reading others' responses - do resonate with many of us, and connect us, from afar. In that sense, they are definitely supportive and much appreciated!

    1. Andrew that is very kind, and I’m glad you’re a regular visitor and enjoy what happens here. I see the numbers so know you are not alone, there are plenty who stop by who don’t engage directly, which is fine. I do like the chance to reflect and respond to comments though too, it does help to make this all feel a little more meaningful.

  4. James, thank you for such an honest post. I understand where you are coming from. Often art - and I see you as an artist - can be a solitary pursuit.
Although this doesn't help the real feeling of loneliness (however that manifests), but seen as part of a bigger picture, you certainly knit together a whole online community through posting about your wonderful work.
I for one thank you. My daily 'check in' here can be the high spot of my day. Sharing here does foster somewhat of an air of community, even if it is different to a conventional one.
Next time you do feel that melancholy, remember that so many of us value and enjoy sharing with you.
    Take care.

    1. Thank you David. There are plenty it seems, who feel part of this little community here and I’m glad we can enjoy that together… I do wonder about arranging some sort of ‘members’ day, perhaps the 80s gala on the Llangollen this Spring/summer.

    2. David - I echo what you say about the daily check-in! When you have a lot on your plate, something like James' philosophical writing can definitely lift your spirits. Due to an impending house move, I cannot do any modelling at present, so reading about it is the next best thing!
James - Now that sounds like a promising idea...
