Mosslanda: Night Shift - Structures!…
Flush with the success of the initial structure but tempered with the frustration of not quite getting things right at the back of the scene I spent a pleasant hour cutting and gluing styrene last night…
This larger structure should overpower the scene, but instead I feel it balances it.
It reminds us that despite their heft, trains, individually, are much smaller than today’s large warehouses. It also reflects light back into the scene. A complete success… I shared a photo with my good friend Chris…
Another quality of this I see, that catches me, is how the whole scene feels washed with this light. Again like in real life.
Chris’s reflection (groan, pun not intended) is great. He has picked up and articulated something I was keen to capture. If you look at the rear warehouse you’ll see it all washed in warm yellow light with just patches where it is brighter. This isn’t a spot light, these yard lights would be unlikely to leave harsh edges to their beams and these miniature SMD type LEDs are doing well in this setting. Their use as the sole layout lighting might seem unusual, but this layout is unlikely to ever leave the workshop and if it does, it will only be displayed in the total dark, as these photos are taken, and where it can come to life. Until next time, more soon…

Another gem James. It's so refreshing, the way you produce such atmospheric scenes in a relatively short time, without worrying about the exact shade of the paint flaking off the back of the doors… I'm not being disparaging towards this, sometimes important detail, just noting that great results can also be achieved without it.

John incredibly kind and certainly encouraging and warm. Thank you. I am looking forward to doing a little more on the project this evening.
DeleteOutstanding. This is model railways as art.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure I'd go that far Ian - but thank you because I really appreciate the sentiment. If art is defined as "the use of the imagination to express ideas or feelings, particularly in painting, drawing or sculpture" then I suppose it very much is ART - this is a feeling, drawn to a photo in a book and recreating it in miniature, a sense of place, somewhere to visit and experience what it might have been like to be there, through the process of creating it...
DeleteVery atmospheric. The way the light bounces and plays around on all the elements is wonderful.
ReplyDeleteThank you - I can't wait to see how it behaves with some colour on things...
DeleteThe scene does remind me of trans-loading yards I have been in. Raining, those argon lights casting a yellowish light, and curtains on the trailer blow about.
ReplyDeleteThanks - it's amazing how these little models can transport people to favourite places or just forgotten memories.
