Commission: Simplex in 16mm…
I try to maintain a sense of rhythm on the blog, it helps keep me focused and gives a sort of heartbeat to the week. Most obvious is the weekly wrap up on a Friday, always incredibly popular and I hope too, that Commissions on a Monday are as warmly received and enjoyed by you all…
This week we’re taking a look at a project that was a very long time in the making - with large delays in the supply of the kit and then missing parts, I am pleased to say that the quality of the Slaters kit and enjoyment in creating this Motor Rail Simplex in 16mm have managed to dull those memories!
Built largely as intended I have modified her a touch, by including Micron RC control and an onboard rechargeable NiMH battery pack. This is hidden under the removable bonnet, which flips up to reveal the on/off switch and recharging socket. I did have to modify the engine casting and leave out the fuel tank but I think the flexibility this modification brings is worth the effort. Soldered where possible and a range of superglues used when not…
I was given free rein on the finish and opted for a grey and green, with lighter green engine block. Modelled as in industrial, post war use, she has the patina of use, but not neglect. The weathering has really brought the model to life, I was particularly pleased with the wooden floor and seat, where I’ve managed to capture the feel of worn paint and the wood showing through very effectively - just using Humbrol enamels and care - no fancy processes, potions or solutions. The exhaust has also come out really nicely, again just a mix of my favourite Humbrol enamels.
Despite the delays I have thoroughly enjoyed building and creating this model and imagining the back story that informed the paintwork and finish. If you’d like me to create something unique and special for your own model railway, in any scale or gauge, I can build kits, kit bash or even Scratchbuild based on drawings, photos or just some guesswork - get in touch to discuss your ideas and wants and we can work up a fixed price proposal. For now, until next time, more soon…

Great weathered finish James. I'm holding off weathering my O gauge stock until I have a copy of your book.
ReplyDeleteTake care
No pressure then hey Tom! Thank you, fourth item of stock for the book completed over the weekend, so making steady progress.
