Down on Beaverbrook: On video U boat and cement…

It has been a while since we’ve been trackside on Beaverbrook. Times change and in recent months PiCement has expanded operations at its Moncton facility…

The influx of new traffic has made operation at the end of the Franklin spur a little problematic - with loads outnumbering car spots necessitating extra trips to bring out the empties and switch cars around - but HMLX are still a young operation and every car counts with the customer as king.

The U23B is my most recently completed locomotive - and it sounds great. Join me for 20 minutes of play, sorry, switching ‘Down on Beaverbrook’ (and grab some headphones for its even better then). This or next week I’ll do a bit of a photo shoot on the model, but for now, enjoy the FDL power unit and faded ex-Conrail paintwork. Until next time, more soon…

  1. James, normal N.A. practice would be first in, first spotted: by placing the off-spot load left over from the previous switch job along with two of the new loads on the 3-car transloading track for unloading, and placing the remaining two new loads off-spot to await their turn next switch.
Unless the customer requested otherwise, of course, say if the off-spot car carried a different type of cement or additive that wasn't needed yet.

This "first in-first out" handling was encouraged by per diem charges on railroad-owned cars (but not privately owned ___X cars), and demurrage on railroad-owned cars held by the customer in excess of the allotted free time for unloading.
