A few weeks ago, whilst out taking photos of something else on the railway I noticed the Llangollen's PW rake all lined up neatly, as if for photography, in the village...
Today's preserved railways have a motley collection of vehicles to maintain the permanent way. This short take includes ballast wagons, spoil wagon and a rail/sleeper wagon. They served their time on the mainline but today see continued useful service, fulfilling the same role for which they were all built. Whilst painted prototypically it is nice to notice 'railway specific' touches in their finish. They may be tired and hard working, but they're not decrepit and worn out. The rust and dirt suggest tatty not ready for the scrap heap - take note when working on weathering your own equivalent models.
I hope these photos, showing a mix of rust, dirt and lichen growth give you some ideas and prove a useful reference point for studying and considering weathering patterns. Even if not of direct use, perhaps the mental exercise in considering how you might re-create these effects is a pleasant distraction this morning? Until next time, more soon...

Lovely photos James. I do enjoy taking snaps of different wagons while out and about.
