Shades of the Burry Port and Gwendreath...

The Burry Port and Gwendreath* was a fascinating railway serving the coal mining operations between Burry Port and Kidwelly and inland too. It's canal origins and hence restricted clearances led to the infamous 'cut down' diesels that served the line...

The closure of the line between Kidwelly Junction and Burry Port, most prone to flooding, after BR re-opened the short line between Coed-bach and the South Wales mainline at Kidwelly, allowed the introduction of the diesel electric Class 08. I've recently mused here and here on layout plans for the railway. It has wriggled under my skin and further modelling inspired by its unique character is inevitable.

08993 was converted from a Graham Farish 08 last year, and it is seen here with some pre-production HEA wagons from Coventry Railworks / Beacon Models. Pont Dulas will be on display, for the first and last time this weekend. I have sold the layout and it will be collected by its new owner on Saturday afternoon. However, I have one set of photos left to share, taken on this recent photoshoot, a lament to follow next week. Until next time, more soon...

*(spelt incorrectly on purpose, for the original promoters made that mistake and it has perpetuated since).

  1. Atmospheric pictures James. Parcel force messaged me to say my books are arriving at midday from Titfield Thunderbolt! Much to look forward to. Take care.

    1. Thank you Ian. Fear not, beyond Gerald Road and Denton Road lies another Welsh cameo… something more gritty but still green…

  3. The books are superb James. Much food for thought. Seeing Shell Island again was like meeting up with an old friend. The skarloey railway pictures are breathtaking! Lots of plans to chew over too. Great stuff. Take care.
