Reminded of the ‘Modeller…

Growing up in the 80s and early 90s, pre-internet, my model railway fix was a diet of monthly Railway Modellers, mostly black and white with just a few pages of ‘colour feature’…

Not only that but there were no digital alterations. The pictures were the product of the photographers skill - and so depth of field wasn’t as great as we are used to these days with mobile phone cameras and image stacking.

I recently dug out a few noughties era digital cameras to see if they still worked. Whilst much of the result was sub-par I noticed a familiar feel in this photo of Denton Road, as if I’d stumbled upon her in the pages of the ‘Modeller…

No doubt that issue would have been worn out, as were many with Ian Futers modern urban layouts - certainly a heavy inspiration in this modern re-mix. Until next time, more soon…

  1. Interesting reminder that we take color media for granted these days.

    1. Indeed - and I wonder if we’ve lost a little something on the way too…

  2. It was Brian Monaghan who was the photographer du jour for Model Railway layouts back in my childhood, and that image of yours certainly captures the essence of magazine images from that time.

    1. Thank you Ian - yes I remember seeing his name in my collection of 'old' RMs that my Grandpa gave me - he used to have things bound so had a big pile of them with the advertising all stripped off ready to go, and then he never sent them, and I ended up with them... they lasted 15 years until Mum forced me to clear out whilst I was at university... the great thing is, they're all available online in the Exact Editions back catalogue of RM!

  4. There is just something about black & White photos James that seem to capture the sharpness of the buildings and the flowing lines. Great photo BTW.

    1. Thanks Kevin. Yes, I noticed how it also picks out the light and dark, especially under the road bridge and multi-storey car park.
