Cornish Rat…

In my recent Lametton Halt video you may have noticed my Bachmann Class 25 making a cameo appearance…

Nicknamed by enthusiasts as ‘Rats’  because they got everywhere, they arrived in the South West in the early 70s as the Western Region prematurely retired its smaller hydraulics - the Class 22 and Hymeks. The Derby machines are, to me slightly ungainly but there is something quitessentially British about them.

The latest Bachmann model runs beautifully, packed with detail and fine etch work. It is readily available from your local model shop and will work out of the box. I tried a Heljan one as it was cheap - and I found out why. I would have loved a Sutton example but they are more difficult to get hold of. Instead, the Bachmann is an everyman. Here, lightly weathered it even has had a Kadee fitted amongst the buffer beam detail and runs without problems on my various shelf creations! A fantastic model, that, as you will I’ve no doubt agree, looks quite at home in the lush green surroundings of the Looe branch.

That all said, I really did love my Dapol class 22 in N gauge… There is something about their compact form. Perhaps a OO one, one day?

Until next time, more soon…

  1. What many of us would like is a retooled 25/3 in N!

    1. Thank you Kevin. Just a gentle weathering to bring the character of the Bachmann tooling to life.
