Penpont reprise…

I really enjoyed making and sharing the Penpont video over the weekend. It was a rather silly project that ended up a great success and seeing it out on my desk once more, I recognised that fact…

It feels at present, with space and time restraints, that my layouts are perhaps just one small part of a larger scheme - running trains on Paxton Road I imagine the yard throat and think about where the train has come from - here on Penpont, whilst the action takes place at the dries my imagination is filled with scenes of the train picking its way along the Camel valley.

They photograph as such too - I walk around them like I’m actually exploring their forms in reality - I suppose I am? Looking for new angles in a familiar location, soaking up atmosphere and enjoying just being here

These small layouts work because they are limited in scope. I love making things yes, but also finishing things and running them. These little layouts are a muse and somewhere to spend time, contemplate new ideas and perhaps introduce new friends (I’m currently modelling Haymarket’s 08710 - another Thornton example from my late 80s early 90s period).

I hope sharing them means you can enjoy them too - and perhaps find encouragement for your own smaller schemes. Until next time, more soon…

  1. A good point, James, about the part imagination plays in our world. It will never be real but it still lives in our imaginations. That’s where half the modelling happens! A pleasure as ever to read your thoughts on these matters.
