Sirdar in 009: boiler...
The tanks and driver are just blu-tacked in position to gauge the visual size. The boiler is a 10mm diameter styrene tube. What you can't see in this photo is the smokebox door has been added from a drawing pin as well. The flange between smokebox and boiler has some plastic square section added as well - and both the smokebox and boiler have been filled with fluid lead. The result is the loco no longer sits on it's trailing end, but more weight over the drivers is still required as when running in reverse it still see-saws a little.
This over-head view of the Sirdar (right) compared to my scratchbuilt Andrew Barclay (loosely based on Porthgain, but shrunk to better fit Creech Bottom) shows how wide Sirdar looks (scale width). Despite being small it is not a tiny engine.
The next job is to build a fire box, then I can add the tanks and cab structure. At that stage both the Barclay and the Kerr Stuart will be ready for detailing and can progress in parallel :) More soon...
