Welshpool and Llanfair steam gala...

Today I visited the Welshpool and Llanfair steam gala, as part of a trip with my daughter and to also head to the Llanfair C. garden railway show...
Mixed weather, but a first for me, travelling onboard the replica Pickering coaches, what a lovely finish and smooth ride, very nice indeed, and a run on the line end to end behind Countess over lunch was fantastic, on the balcony by the smokebox on the journey to Welshpool.
In the afternoon we managed a trip to Castle C. behind Zillertal, squeezed on the balcony we enjoyed the late afternoon sunshine. Zillertal was so smooth and powerful and sounded incredible on the journey, almost as nice as the Resita I travelled behind a few years ago on the line (I know it wasn't popular with volunteers and staff at the railway, but it was a real favourite of mine, a powerful industrial locomotive with real character).
All in all, a busy day full of new experiences and great fun. Definitely heading back for another ride behind Zillertal this year, and I hope it was a success for the railway. More soon...

  1. James,

Good to know that you and your daughter enjoyed your visit to our gala and in particular your trip behind Zillertal. Our visitors have little idea of how much work took place at Llanfair,to get that engine through its UK boiler exam.

    Regards, Geoff

    1. Geoff, a great railway and the effort was worthwhile as Zillertal stole the show from all accounts. I've enjoyed visiting once or twice a year since childhood.
