Hudson Hunslet: Prototype weathered...
Well, it's funny how with the project moving forwards my own prototype model got left at the stage of painting as work got underway on the batch...
However, with the first batch nearly finished this year, I've turned back to me own model which stood out like a sore thumb in the photo the other day. I determined it must be 'dirtied' up so once the production models were drying I set too with the same process on it.
Work starts with a wash of Humbrol 98, 33 and a touch of 53, panel by panel, which is wiped off with a piece of kitchen roll in a vertical motion. This sounds easy, but is actually something that requires patience and practice as too much white spirit in the mix will pool at the bottom of panels even after you've rubbed most of the wash off. Take your time...
Second, detail painting with a slightly thicker wash adds streaks and oil stains to the footplate and around certain details which lifts the effect somewhat...
Final stage is dry brushing gunmetal 53 on the exposed edges, bringing them to life and then stippling a little on the footplate.
Since these photos have been taken I've also added an oil can to the footplate and carved and painted the seat/tool box cover to look like weathered wood. There is still capacity for one or two models in the 2020 batch, if you're interested please let me know, they are available for £1150 and no payment is due until work starts the middle of next year. More soon...
