Kinross (and me) on video...
I’ve done video in the past on here and my Facebook page, I’ve even appeared in the Planet Industrials interview on BRM but I’ve never tried something quite like this before...
I can’t say it will be a regular feature but it certainly was a fun way to spend a wet and miserable afternoon here in North Wales today. I hope, at least that either the footage, or the commentary, help encourage and inspire you to have a go yourself; Kinross was conceived in late December and, bar the lighting pelmet, is pretty much complete now about 8 weeks later.
What I’m really interested to find out from you all is your thoughts and feelings about the the video format versus the usual written dialogue. Until next time, more soon...
Hi James, For what it is worth I really enjoyed your video. Gives a good perspective of your layout and sometimes it is far easier to understand a concept in a moving narrated visual way than in the written word and photographs. I find 5 to 6 minute long videos of this sort just right to dip into when the opportunity arises. No doubt if there are video experts out there they may have things to say about production but I liked what you did! Wouldn't want to see you your blog become vlog but a video every now and then would be great. Hope that is of use? Woody
ReplyDeleteThanks Woody...
DeleteYes I take all your comments on board, and appreciate you taking time to share them. Very much hand held filming, and edited on the phone itself, as an experiment, so perhaps next time a tripod would help, or a third hand to use the throttle whilst holding the camera steady,
Hi James, A tripod might be of use as evolution wise we seem, no matter how many times we may wish it, not to have that often needed third hand! In my mind and watching many YouTube videos you sometimes get the impression that the makers are trying to emulate Spielberg and the important bit about the modelling gets lost in the glitz of video effects and introductions which seem to be more about Star Wars than model railways! Your was nicely made, informative, held my attention and most importantly gave my brain that inspiration to do more myself! As the song goes 'It ain't what you do its the way that you do it' and you do it so well both written and video wise! Woody
DeleteNice video James, really enjoyed watching. Great to get the opportunity to see some movement on this lovely little layout, I hope we'll get to see something similar for the colliery layout. Nice to see you looking well after your brush with C19 as well. Keep up the good work.
DeleteWoody, those are such kind words, thank you.
DeletePat, thank you, yes on the mend, suffering a lot with sleep at the moment, but getting better, I will look at doing something similar sometime for Pont-y-dulais talking through the various elements.
That would be great James. Now that, I'm building a 'large' (for me) layout in the loft I find I'm getting the urge to also do something small again, very much for an itch that I feel I need to scratch, just as you said. I've got a stack of ply that should keep me busy for years.
DeleteNicely done James. I plan to use your scene concept for the scales beyond my main O scale layout.
DeleteI would be inclined to blend a few videos with your written posts. Videos could be quite complementary. At work, I’ve been putting short videos together for our bridges and have kept them to under two minutes. Viewing starts falling off after about 90 seconds. Then again, your models are far more interesting than full scale bridges. Thanks Pete
Very nice. This is about 15 mins from where I live. I passed this spot many times on the passenger train which ran until the mid 60's. It's a walking trail now, but the warehouse is still there.
DeleteErrol, that’s amazing. I hope my mode has recreated something of your past.
