‘Stanley’ the Baldwin...

It’s the summer of 1952 and our photographer visited East Works, near Norden on the Isle of Purbeck to capture this lovely idyllic scene...
‘Stanley’ the Baldwin arrived in 1951, formerly known as Peggy on the Ashover Light Railway, where the old cab front of Guy had been used to enclose the rear, after the triangle at Ashover was taken out of service and the Baldwins began to run cab backwards. More successful than Russell, it served well on the light loads of the clay lines until 1955 when cut up for scrap on site, sadly missing the early preservation movement that ensured the Hunslet, also on site, survived for posterity.

Of course, this is East Works, my soon to be sold second Purbeck based narrow gauge 009 layout. The locomotive is a Bachmann model, originally an Ashover Hummy, with custom made and 3D printed cab rear, repainted and fitted with crew and plates from Narrow Planet. The skip wagons are from Dundas Models kits. More soon...

  1. I really do like your Baldwin conversion. The rear cab adds a certain something which makes it stand out. Will be sorry to see “East Works” disappear from your blog. Have you any more thoughts re a Snailbeach micro layout?

    1. Thanks Philip. It never really fitted in at home here, although I loved building it. It will be good to know it’s gone to a new home. Snailbeach? No, long dead that scene I’m afraid although it was a neat plan.
