Commission: Taliesin in 009 (take two)…

Last year I put together a Backwoods kit of Taliesin, the Ffestiniog Railway in 009. The result was I was commissioned again to build a second model for another loyal customer…

The kit isn’t overly complicated yet is delicate and refined and rewards patience. Working on each element patiently in turn, building up a working model that runs as well as it looks requires a great deal of time. Turning the raw brass into a finished model even more so, yet the results make all that effort feel worthwhile.

This time I was asked for the earlier preservation livery, which required reworking if my original lining design, these one panel decals are incredibly fine and thin, but when they go on right look superb. Although I’m sharing photos here, there is still coal for the bunker (period wise, incorrect, but what my customer wanted) and couplings to fit.

The etched plates are from Custom Nameplate Studio because those supplied are a little compromised in both finesse and size, these replacements are superb, mind I wonder if the bunker ones look a little larger than prototype. The fact you can read the text on them is sublime!

What I like about commissions like this is turning a flat green box into a treasured model. As pretty as etches are, kits, when not flawed, should be enjoyed in 3D form. If you have a draw full of flat boxes why not get in touch and see if we can make some of them a more enjoyable reality? Prices from around £450 and up for etched kit construction, use the contact form on the home page menu to get in touch for a personal proposal. Until next time, more soon…
