Hebridean dreams…

The lumpy almost agricultural idle of the Sulzer is almost lulling me to sleep. At rest by the sea, following its journey from the Highland capital, I’m tired too having arrived with her early this morning, adventure in my heart. Now the waves gently lap on the pier and the gulls cry, I must peel myself away from the station and leave the rails behind to continue to the Hebrides…

That imagined journey, one I have mentally travelled so many times has only been enriched by building this highland terminus in N scale. A physical manifestation of day dreaming, of Hamish Macbeth, Local Hero, possibly even The Wicker Man… a world away from reality, yet close enough to touch. To be.

Above my bench sits both Lochdubh and a photo I took in 2000 at Kyle. I had driven there, but witnessed the arrival of a train from Inverness, lingering long enough to pretend I was returning that way… a classic 158 up to the buffers, not quite the Sulzer of my dreams, but good enough. Two rails, weaving their way alongside Lochs and up and over mountain passes… through all weathers and all time, the stuff of dreams and dreaming, of travelling without worries or concerns, without the baggage of every day, a journey of discovery, of self discovery. One that needn’t take us from our workshop, just turn on the lights and let our imagination wash over us… until next time, more soon…

  1. Hi James

Hope you are having a good relaxing weekend and getting some inspiration from/for your dreams

I guess all our model railroading is based on dreams. In my case dreams of what a logging shortline would be based on visits and books maybe but distilled into that which you would like to have experienced. Even more so when I dream of modelling a mining railway or a sugar tramway.

    Best regards
    Alan
