Closely cropped…

I always edit my photos, cropping and adjusting colours to best match how the models appear to me in person. It’s something I do with real life subjects as well…

Here, this evocative photo on my small box layout Mollington Road was lit with my iPhone, but you wouldn’t know this from the composition. By adjusting colour and cropping the photo takes on a pleasing balance and removes distractions. As a comparison, I include the original photo taken below…

By cropping we help the viewer focus on the subject and improve realism, it isn’t cheating, rather part of the creative process. Removing distractions, out of focus portions and adjusting colour only improves a photograph and is a skill worth practicing. I use many of the same techniques on photos of prototype railways, improving the photograph to make sure the viewer can see the story I am telling.

Documenting our models is another strand of this wonderful hobby. Sharing with others as well as using it as a method to critique our own work, never the less I hope you’ve enjoyed todays ramble! Until next time, more soon…
