Alan Sewell visits CARRIERES REDLAND GRANULATS de FLETY...

Alan's adventures continue with more from his visit diaries collected whilst on family holidays to France. This week we're visiting a ballast quarry in eastern France...

CARRIERES REDLAND GRANULATS de FLETY

Gauge: Standard

Date of Visit: August 1995

This quarry situated on the northern side of SNCF line, from Nevers to Autun, is a major supplier of ballast and quarry products in eastern France.

The sidings leave the SNCF line and curve into the loading area via a short branch. The tracks are parallel and slightly below the mainline and comprise

four long sidings of which one is for loading and two used for making up outbound trains.

Within the yard there are signs that tracks formerly led further into quarry but these are now overgrown or buried. Currently trains are loaded from a small storage bin fed by overhead conveyor. This single loading point is shunted by a Moyse 36TDE 4WDE rebuilt by Patry, and acquired in 1992. The loco is kept stabled on an adjoining spur when not in use.

Dumped at the end of a siding was a venerable Moyse 20TDE built in 1926, largely intact but becoming overgrown.

  1. Hi James

Glad you found another of my ramblings of interest and I hope your readers do to!!

I visited Luzy when we went to stay with a French family in Decize who hosted my daughters' French exchange visits. Interestingly ( for me) there were in still remains of a tileworks railway there- but that may be another story. For most people the interesting part about Decize maybe is that is mid-way between Sancerre and Beaujolais!! For some reason in 1995 I had my bike and decided to cycle the twenty or so miles to Luzy. I nearly gave up but did fid the quarry, enjoyed a walk around taking photos and returned in time for the evening meal. I think our French hosts and probably my wife thought I was mad!!!

    Best regards

    Alan

  2. Thanks to Alan for another interesting selection of images. That overgrown Moyse 20TDE is very interesting and could inspire a person to a layout on its own.
