Gerald Road: Walled in…

Sometimes small jobs become large obstacles… or perhaps just excuses. Progress on Gerald Road has been slow. There are no expectations or deadlines, so not late, or disappointing - just slow, slow in comparison with other projects I’ve created or worked upon…

In my head these walls at the back of the composition had become stumbling blocks, obstacles to progress. In reality though, I suspect the obstacle was my head and heart. This, as I have said before, is a deeply personal project. I wonder if I just wasn’t ready to work on it again?

Because once knife met styrene these small walls, a scale 6ft high, came together really quickly. 30 thou core with embossed overlays and micro strip detail. With them placed on the layout I could assess their success and what else might be required… I wonder if the semi and that section of wall needs raising to the road level? Beyond, something will be needed behind the pub too… that’s todays job then!

You’ll also note, the infills have been replaced with styrene - this is thinner than the mounting card and sits below rail level… a section in front of the warehouse has been left - and this will be filled with ballast and weeds… story telling, an opportunity presented by not wanting to waste the plastic I had cut anyway!

These photos are taken under my desk light, they still demonstrate, I hope, the potential of this 500mm micro layout - and more widely, the potential of N, in small spaces to delight and inspire. I can’t wait to see the 03 darting around this make believe slice of the Avonside Wharf. Until next time, more soon…

  1. James at time when your head and heart aren't in the game I think it has a knock affect. Especially when it comes to modelling. Something small can look like a huge obstacle. Its nice though you have done some work on the layout.
