Mosslanda: Denton Road - rendered in grey…
Whilst not entirely in grey (some structures are built onto clear acrylic) this week has seen renewed attention on Denton Road, and with the completion of the detail I wanted to add around trackside cabling, I could dismantle it and spray the structures in primer…
Compare this 3D sketch above with the original inspiration for the project. The Mosslanda shelf has required a thinning of the scene but it’s wonderful to gaze into this space, even without a train in sight, and feel the potential of this greatest hits of train travel through Northern cities…
All of the structures are removable, they fit together loosely and once painted will be fixed in position. It will also soon be time to cut and fix the single piece back scene I had printed at the same time as that for Coalbridge Street. Finishing touches, yet quite a way ahead of the finish line… This project is a bit topsy turvy in the way that the order of work is dictated by a desire to ensure a good fit and finish and the minimum of unsightly gaps under structures. The plan is that everything will be firmly glued down, and the ballast will hide the gaps I’ve not been able to engineer out of the scheme…
Looking at it here though, I can see the story, I can remember the journeys, I can almost smell the exhaust of the Pacer and hear the wheel squealing as we pull into the platform. I’m excited by the composition and the nods to my cultural references (the name itself even). I enjoy plugging in the small fiddle stick and running a train. I love how personal a small layout like this can be, not just in the way we interact with it, but the story telling too…
If you want to see more of this compact but rather wonderful layouts development, then the ‘Denton Road’ label will pick these all out for you.
Until next time, more soon…

Hi James. Interesting to see how you install the cable trunking for the signalling next to the track in the last photo, something I've always forgotten about at this stage in the build and had to try and install after ballasting. Really instructive. The scene definitely has atmosphere, it will look great when finished. Take care.
ReplyDeleteThanks Tom - yes, and all of this will be painted BEFORE I ballast anything. It probably makes things a touch more 'modern' than I originally planned as I was hoping for something more period agnostic, but as things progress it has very much settled into 1990-2000 era.
DeleteThe underpasses draw me. Like I want to step closer so I can see what is on the other side.
ReplyDeleteThe light and dark, the shadow - yes, very effective. Whilst not perfect, I think the back scene 'beyond' these elements works well enough too...
