Ruston LB in 7/8ths: Prototype painted…

It’s been an adventure to get to here but stood here now it’s been worth it… for the prototype Ruston LB, bar the front headlight I’m calling the detail work and basic finishing done. I’m looking forward to starting production models in November…

Combining the very best elements of 3D design and print, 2D design and laser cut plastic and etched metal details with handmade scratch built detail, hand assembly and finishing, this is my most ambitious model to date. It features a prototypical gearbox drive with chain driven final connection to each axle from a central gearbox output shaft, the bonnet features engine detail behind etched metal covers, secured by non functional wing nuts. In the cab we have a full set of 3D designed and printed controls in a highly detailed and flexible plastic, and the option of the underground version shown here with exhaust conditioner, or a full cab with glazed cab windows.

£1330 including complete customisation and radio control, developed and built with you…

Drive is via a micro motor and gear head reduction, through bevel gears to the output shaft, all contained in a false gearbox housing that mimics the prototype. It will crawl slowly yet cope with a steady walking pace, and the direct drive (I.e. no worm) means it will work with gradients as well. On board rechargeable batteries are under the bonnet but within the wheelbase providing weight for traction. Wheelsets are Slaters 7/8ths on custom axles running in miniature roller bearings with plastic discs to disguise the spokes, under the frames you’ll find a representation of the brakes and linkages. Gauge can be 32 or 45mm specified at order and not adjustable as the frames are different. This 32mm gauge prototype mimics a 18” gauge, and as such there isn’t space between the wheelsets and the gearbox to fit the chain drive, so this is outboard of the wheels, which then necessitates the frame extensions. The 45mm gauge models will feature straight frames with the axle boxes mounted underneath.

The model is available to order for a limited time, I will accept reservations until the end of November and then that’s it, no more and I’ll be on to the next project (which I think, by request, might be the Ruston Proctor at last, in 7/8ths). These are hand made models to your exact specification, the journey is part of the experience, you’ll be part of the build process and specifying details throughout, before selecting the paintwork and weathering finish you require. The result is a truly custom model and a unique experience, read comments about it on the ‘Commissions’ page above.

The price is £1330 delivered, which includes all you see here plus a Deltang based radio control and transmitter. This is payable by £130 deposit at reservation followed by four instalments, through the build. If you’re genuinely interested in owning a miniature recreation of the last of the Ruston narrow gauge diesels then please contact me using the form on the website, Facebook or one of the forum messaging systems.
