Commission: Devonport stock in OO...

When Steve and I started Planet Industrials I remember becoming quickly aware of the quirky but extensive railway system at Devonport Royal Dockyard...

It was after Warley last year when I began development of the first 'cab conversion' in the Planet Industrials range, based upon the Devonport examples, to fit the Hattons model. This later spawned a range of similar cab conversions, and led to further models and kits in the range. So, it was lovely to revisit this prototype, and this particular kit.

The Hattons model is a solid performer and fairly easy to work on - two screws and some plastic details removed and the chassis drops out. The cab clips on, the replacement cab does away with the clips to be just a firm tight fit on the firebox. Handrails and details are prised off the donor cab and refitted on the replacement, secured with a drop of superglue. On this model I also cut down the safety valve assembly and lowered the chimney a touch.

Paintwork applied over a primer, this is Humbrol 20, a lovely rich colour, and a perfect base for the custom decals. These were applied with Micro-sol, and sealed with Humbrol Clear, the matt version. This is a new product to me, and goes on well - having the benefit of completely sealing the decals protecting them from further damage with weathering. This was applied with a wash, airbrush and dry brush to give a work worn but well looked after finish. Glazing is just 'glue-n-glaze' which is neat in these smaller windows. Some RT Models details adorn the footplate, and the Hattons vacuum pipework and coupling hook are fitted on the buffer beams.

My customer also asked about some suitable rolling stock, so we selected a few wagons as pictured in the book on the system - and used a Parkside 7 plank with no end door, and a Parkside (ex Ratio) gunpowder van - these were built as per the instructions but ensuring to match prototype details, suggesting brake gear on one side only. The transfers were custom drawn and produced for me specifically for this commission. In time, these may find their way into the Pi transfer range.
