Scottish Railfreight…

In 1987 British Rail was actively promoting it's Speedlink 'wagon load' service. One commodity that seemed well suited to rail was the transportation of speciality bricks...

26037 is captured in this period at Paxton Road having recently arrived from Thornton Yard to collect the empty OBA wagons left for unloading the previous day. The traffic was sadly short lived, and Speedlink came to an end in 1991, although Transrail and later EWS under Ed Burkhardt did try to revive wagonload freight through 'Enterprise' but to no avail. Today the only rail freight left on British rails is almost exclusively trainloads of construction material, containerised intermodal and some power station fuel. The days of the trip working and local goods terminal have gone, and with them one more opportunity for the youngster to connect with the railway around them.

This is Paxton Road, the above is loosely based upon reality but features a Dapol Class 26 lightly weathered with buffer beam detail and a DG coupling fitted. The OBA is an out of the box Farish model with a DG fitted. Track is British Finescale Code 40 bull head, the layout features extensively on the blog. I think the scale has huge untapped potential and hope to do more work in it through 2023, perhaps tackling a larger exhibitable project. Until then though, more soon...
