Alan Sewell visits Ugine Kulman…

The latest instalment of Alan’s industrial railway visit reports continues our adventures across the channel. This time we’re heading to the French Alps, on another diversion from his family holidays…

S.A UGINE KULMAN

Division Metaux Non Ferraux

Plombiere, Savoie, France

Gauge: Standard

Date of Visit: August 95

This works situated on the wooded side of an alpine valley separated from SNCF line by main road.

The sidings leave the SNCF at Plombiere station where there is a set of storage sidings and a loading shed. This contained an SNCF Y-series locotracteur possibly on hire or recently purchased. From these siding the tracks ran past a small loco shed containing a green diesel and curved sharply towards the works crossing the road and climbing into the loading area. Here several sidings served two loading sheds.

One shed contained a rake of tank wagons to which was coupled a small "track mobile" type loco. In the yard was parked another working locomotive, a green numberless 4wD Batignolles-Chatillon of 1948.

It’s always a pleasure to share these with you all and thank you once again to Alan for allowing me to publish extracts from his extensive notes. There are now quite the ‘back catalog’ of Alan’s visits and you can find them using the ‘Alan Sewell’ label. Until next time, more soon…

  1. Hi James

Glad you found this of interest. If you or others want some more I will see if there is anything I might think your readers may find interesting. I did visit Austria and Germany back in the very early 70's and even made it to the watch towers of the Czech border . Most of my "holiday" visits then were to steel mills and mines still using steam so maybe not much inspiration to you. I will however look out some more short notes from France and other places. Gives me an opportunity to revisit my files

    Best regards

    Alan
