Hilton Lokal Bahn…

This diminutive red shunter, bought for the European shelf layout project has proven to be a wonderful little model. Quiet, smooth and nicely detailed with bags of character…


I had originally intended to repaint it. My plans evolved in the early moments of Kohlenbachbrücke when I consciously decided to use models ‘as they came’ - just allowing myself gentle modification, repair and weathering at a later date. In no small part this Liliput diesel contributed to that decision, its rich red broken up with lovely cream handrails and the spots of colour, the blue wheel chocks and red fire extinguisher and most of all, those cute yellow overhead warning flashes. 


I have allowed myself one small modification though, and that is rather than removing the OBB painted on markings I have designed and had custom etched some nickel silver replacements for the HLB - the Hilton Lokal Bahn. These small touches personalise and appeal to my inner child, almost my own train-set, and as with my 009 modelling of the past, slightly more creative with the proto-freelance approach. Fortunately, we Central Europeans have a rich choice of two- and three-axle diesel shunters also applicable for general service incl. passenger trains on most minor and most remote branch lines, even in smaller continental scales TT and N. As far as my choice goes, I consider the coolest of them N- and TT-scale German Köf II made by Arnold, N- and TT-scale German WR 360 (Hobby Train, Zeuke/BTTB/Tillig) and TT-scale PIKO model of the Russian "Kaluga", all of the mentioned ones in various liveries. And Czech home TT-layouts are crowded for three family generations with a plethora of ČSD three-axles T 334.0/710 made since 1960s for more than 50 years (sic!) consecutively by Zeuke, BTTB and Tillig - the same factory under various owners and trade marks. Most of the mentioned are available also in H0 but H0 is not my cup of tea - if you are going to develop this direction further on try to check yourself continental e-shops and German eBay.

    1. Thanks, that is good advice. I find that non British stuff on British eBay goes very cheap though too, and this locomotive was around £50 which seems an absolute bargain. No plans for expansion though, this whole scheme is built to a budget and limited scope and stock is all part of its allure.

  2. There's something very appealing about a Little Red Engine like this; my own LRE, which was the first loco I bought for Schinkendorf, is in DB Orient Red with various white bits, and it's still my favourite.
    While I'm sticking with DB for the moment, I've found a couple of books about private lines, both of which have much of interest.
    My stock so far is very much "common or garden", with just a few more specialised vehicles which I've tried to find justifications for on a rural backwater, based on photos in books and online, with a very few that I just like!

    1. Thanks Simon - yes, I think you'd do well to keep focused, it certainly helps to avoid scope creep with these 'diversions' from the more usual subjects you and I find ourselves ensconced in!
