Commission: Puerto Bella Sugar…

Narrow gauge modelling in 009 is often portrayed in the modelling media as all quaint and Welsh, however the opportunity for modelling industrial systems and in doing so fit more into a given space means that it can be an excellent choice with a huge range of prototypes to suit individual taste...

In this case I have been working with a customer who had already decided upon a rough scheme and prototype but enjoyed working through my Layout Design process to help firm up and crystallise those ideas and for me to check things fitted using track planning software before proceeding to some illustrative sketches to help visualise how the layout might appear if constructed.

The prototype in this case is industrial growth, harvesting and milling of sugar. Inspired by visits over the years to prototypes across the world, but with a focus on both Caribbean and Pacific island networks, my customer had narrowed down on the mill process - even dreaming up a tramway arrangement to help him pick out a part that could be portrayed in the space he had available. Through the layout brief process we explored the wants and givens, and reflected on the overly complex and crowded scheme that was originally sketched and I reflected on a few things we could tweak to improve visual balance across the scheme.

In the end, we settled on a tapered plan which helped emphasise the physical presence of the mill both in footprint and vertical height, as well as fit better in the home location. The engine shed on the front provides some interest, and a view block, whilst the empty sugar cane wagons along the back act as a sort of 3D back scene. Basic operation sees trains arriving from off stage right, and being shunted in to the various locations for loading. Loaded bulk sugar and molasses then head off to the riverside loading dock.

Working through a flexible but structured process can help really crystallise your needs and wants, and result in a layout scheme that is achievable within your budget, timespan and skill level. If you'd like me to help you then costs start from around £150 depending on scope. Get in touch using the contact form on the left hand menu (or via the three horizontal lines at the top), and I can put a personal proposal together. In the meantime, more soon...

    2. James,
I do agree, no need for another welsh-ish(?) layout.
"...Look forward to what we do next! "
And the audience even more !
