The joy of learning...
Factual information books are absolutely wonderful treasures, in a way the internet can never replace. They provide a choreographed view of a particular subject in one place...
I can't ever imagine a world without books. In the evening after a busy day, the lazy weekend morning or in bed just before sleep, picking up my current favourite and leafing through it's pages, enjoying getting lost in it's contents either passively in photography or learning something new in the text.
My latest second hand purchase was this old (1996) copy of the 'American Shortline Railway Guide' from Kalmbach. In it's pages you'll find such exotic and unfamiliar titles as the 'Crab Orchard and Egyptian' or 'Lowville and Beaver River' as well as the facts and figures of characterful friends (perhaps the 'Modesto and Empire Traction' or 'Mohawk Adirondack and Northern'). You'll find familiar place names and these might inspire you to either free-lance or even model the prototype (plenty of British sounding names like 'Stockton Terminal & Eastern' or the 'Stourbridge'). However the book may work for the you, the individual, it's pages of lists, outline information, photos as well as even complete listing of abandoned shortlines is the real treasure. Something that no amount of Wikipedia pages can ever replace. It is tangible and made, deliberate and considered. I love books, I love learning.
Until next time, more soon...
