Friday Update: Nineteen Eight Twenty-two…

It's been a busy week, not much work, but lots of life! Kids off here, and we've gone from unbearable heat to un-ending drizzle...

The week started well, with a lovely kind gesture from customer and regular here, Alan Sewell, who sent me a copy of his book on the Rio Tinto Railway. I love these sorts of titles, a chance to learn about a system of which I knew nothing. A mix of commentary on the business at large before focusing largely on the railway and it's stock.

A trip to Pembrokeshire netted some nice weather, and a chance for more reading (below)...

...as well as walks along the coast path and views like this! When we live somewhere so beautiful I do wonder if I'll ever go abroad again.

Back home work has progressed ever so slightly on the O gauge Class 47 (below, under frame weathering - still wet in the photo) and some new parts for various projects have arrived from Shapeways - but I've not had a chance to clean and photograph them yet! This includes a commission and some parts for the next 7/8ths Ruston project.

An exciting parcel from Modelu, a whole set of their new H0 scale range for me to review and check over, although tired from a days driving I couldn't resist opening it up, cleaning up a sprue and checking out this conductor figure on Beaverbrook - these characters are going to be game changers for me! Wonderful, and so kind of Alan to include me in the review process. I originally supplied a whole heap of reference material which I believe helped, as well as following this up with advice when they were at the costume hire place and conforming H0 scale dimensions for things like hand height (below shows this was worth while!). I can't wait to get some paint on these next week! (excuse the hair and dust in this cruel close up - it was a hurried shot last night).

Somehow I've managed to find enough content to keep the blog going despite the slow down with kids holidays - I hope you've enjoyed this weeks variety, and I'll try and keep things moving until we go back to normal in September. For now though, have a good weekend, enjoy the time off and until next time, more soon...

  1. Hi James

Good to know you are able to take a break in the country. It certainly looks greener than here in the East. A couple of days of rain have helped but not enough

Very pleased you enjoyed the Rio Tinto book. It was a bit of a labour of love, with quite a long gestation period from 1979 to 1991. I think I took a draft away with me each year on our family holidays and worked on it, when the children were in bed, developing the text, although as soon as Plateway Press got involved things progressed quickly. I, and I imagine Plateway, wondered how it would be received but surprisingly it got good reviews and I got some positive feedback from people who worked at Rio Tinto. That was really pleasing. I had started the research as a basis for modelling but then the book sort of took over.

The new H0 Modelu figures look good (the conductor’s pose is spot on for a loco switching) and I hope to get some when they are available. I sent them some photos of North American train crews and hope they were able to use some of them along with the information you sent.
Hope t you are able to continue enjoying time with your children. The end of the holidays is approaching fast

    Best regards

    Alan
