Hopeful on Beaverbrook…

In the late eighties there was a fragile feeling of hope for the railways in the Maritimes. CNs privatisation had seen the spinning off of ‘loss making’ lines in Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island to TerraTransport…

That new hope saw green locomotives and expansion including ex CP lines too - but as the millennium ticked over storm clouds gathered and we all are familiar with the eventual sell-out to G&W, the pruning of what remained and the proliferation of abandonment. Looking back perhaps TerraTransport was just a postponement of the inevitable but in that moment, seeing its distinctive logo on the side of ‘our’ locomotives down on Beaverbrook was rather wonderful.

The full faux TerraTransport history has not yet been told but the chapters that have can be found using the label. Beaverbrook continues to play host to my own recreations of this might have been parallel universe. If you’re interested in including any of this in your own project do get in touch. Until next time, more soon…
