Mosslanda: Denton Road - Neutral palette…

What a difference a day makes - in this case we’ve gone from grey primer to shades of reality as the station and multi-storey car park come to life…

I mentioned yesterday a desire to keep the restrained, almost neutral palette so as to allow the trains to take centre stage, have I succeeded? The ‘boring blue’ 31 feels very much at home amongst the grey and brown and even the blue 60s addition blends in to the same. Whilst very comfortable together these shades are modulated by sharing common colours and those I know already work together in this way, complementary not in art theory, but in their mundane base…

So a lot of progress in a little time, I wonder if this new found focus is in part due to the efforts on Penpont Dries. That smallest of micro layouts was conceived, constructed and shared with you all in real time over just a week or two… with it complete I’ve applied the same approach to other ‘jobs’ around the workshop - and on projects such as Denton Road, despite its complexity, small focused activity allows visible progress.

In recent months Denton Road has played host, between focused work, to the Dapol Pacer (above). I was excited this last week or so to see the decorated samples of their forthcoming 143/144 Pacers - I have a WYPTE red with white stripe 144 on order because I always liked these in my diesel spotters guide. We never saw them in Cheshire and by the time I spread my wings it was being replaced - but still extant, through Leeds on those journeys to and from university.

There isn’t a great deal of operational interest in a Mosslanda but in this instance I’m excited by the world both around and beyond the rails. The layers in depth and height add a great deal of interest and feeling. I love the way you can enjoy the models from so many different and sometimes surprising angles in this tiny scheme. It’s going to be fun to push it towards and across the finish line, taking and sharing photos with you all. Until next time, more soon…
