The smell of summer…

The smell, of cut hay fields after fresh rain,
the smell of summer. Memories,
of reluctant walks to the beach and those wet Hi-Tec trainers,
journeys along overgrown and forgotten lines,
on new trains, over old rails, standing room only.
Adventures dreamt, the precarious edge between adolescence and adulthood,
a tight rope of steel ribbons,
only later recognising the wonderful value of that time,
through old eyes, a warm heart and kind reminisce.
The smell of summer.

  1. I wasn't allowed Hi-Tech trainers, Mum bought me Dunlop ones instead. I love the crunchy of freshly cut wheat and barley stubble under my feet, the feeling of summer. Wonderful stuff James.

    1. Hi-tec trainers! I didn't want them, I wanted Adidas or Puma - but yes, the stubble under your feet too... it was the smell as I walked to the station yesterday, all of that just flowed from it...
