Penpont Dries: Alfresco…

As I type this morning, enjoying a cool breeze through open windows and bathing in the weather forecast that predicts a high of just 19degC I reflect upon the oppressive conditions of the past few nights - and also, the success of my latest garden railway endeavours…

We’re not talking about an extension to the Dyfrdwy Tramway or a reprise of the my of the EJ&KLR - no, something considerably smaller - Penpont dries, the ultimate portable model railway joined me outside for some evening operation on the garden table…

It was rather wonderful. Sat shunting, mindlessly - or mindfully perhaps, whilst talking with family. The only thing missing really was a cold beer. The experience brought to mind Chris’s A side B side, and I pondered how good playing trains on Penpont with a good friend, good beers and good conversation would be…

Today, the weather is cooler, Penpont is with me inside and promises a different type of ad-hoc accessible operation. Thankfully things look more bearable for a few days - but next time the mercury rises I will be in mind to repeat this experience. Another benefit of enjoying this most micro of micro layouts. Until then, more soon…

  1. Sometimes the best ideas are the simplest James. I was mulling over your Fremington quay track plan in the Art of Railway Modelling yesterday evening in the garden with a chilled Brew dog IPA. I'd become so fixated on the quart in a pint pot scheme that I'd overlooked this gem of a plan. Am rearranging code 55 on a board this morning, seeing how it fits. Penpont Dries is a great little layout. Enjoy the cool weather. Take care.

    1. Great choice of beer…
You’re not helping my day dreams of clay layouts…

Fremington in the book is a cut down version of a Hilton and Mears from the blog: https://paxton-road.blogspot.com/2022/09/hilton-and-mears-in-north-devon.html

Great choice of beer, fully approve here!

  2. James penpont dries looks really nice outdoors. Nice to be able to carry out some shunting always brings a smile to one's face. Penpont is definitely one of my favourite micro layouts you have built. Im so pleased the weather is more bearable today.

    1. Thank you Kevin - yes, not always a smile, but often a calming effect.

  3. Hi James,
It's taken a while for me to "get" Penpoint Dries, but the top photo did it.
I think I was struggling to visualise the whole thing from the close-ups and drawings, despite knowing the sizes of the various elements.
Seeing it complete and set up on your garden, I can imagine building something similar...
    Cheers, Simon.
