Mosslanda: Texture vs colour…
In the smaller scales the balance between colour and texture moves away from absolutely 100% accurate into the realms of impressionism...
The warehouse wall you see here on Wrecsam Canolog is a great example. Whilst I decided to use N scale brick embossed sheet this is grossly over scale - that said it's a pattern our eyes expect to see so rather than sweat the small stuff and count bricks I made it the right proportions. The red brick 'stripes' should be three bricks tall, they're only one in the model, but the proportions remain accurate. A muted faded yellow brick colour works well and once under the canopy, the result will feel right.
Interestingly, you can't see it in this photo, but the platform texture is smooth and the difference between edge stones, yellow square 'skate stoppers' and the red brick herringbone surface is suggested only in colour. Where the overscale texture works on the vertical surfaces I don't feel it would be as convincing on the flat? The photo shows the progress on this small layout, a good foil to my work in larger scale, larger volumes and is a place to practice, experiment and learn.
Until next time, more soon...
