Commission: Peckett post-date in OO...
I love working with my own kits, and combining the Hornby Peckett and the Planet Industrials ‘Peckett Post-date’ kit with the requirement to try to match the prototype calls on a combination of physical and digital model making...
First of all, this donor models arrived from my customer with DCC sound and stay alive crammed into the cab, not ideal, but there is no where else for it on the Hornby Peckett. Unfortunately this made things much more complicated when fitting the replacement cab. However, once that was completed I could begin the transformation.
Working from photographs of the prototype I was able to draw up custom transfer artwork for the shaded lettering on the buffer beam and cab sides, as well as the NCB crest on the upper cab side. Whilst these were being made I painted the model in a hand mixed shade of ‘Ashington’ blue, and applied this with an airbrush over grey primer, and hand painted the wheel centres and frames. When dry, the Matt black and satin red parts were painted by hand, and finally the brass work picked out.
The transfers were applied carefully using Micro-set and Micro-sol to achieve a good finish, and the etched works plate cut out and fitted to the cab side. Weathering consisted of a wash, followed by airbrushed soot and dirt and final dry brushing. The model now looks well loved but hard working and ready for my customers NCB north east colliery layout. If you have a model you’d like me to work on, whether it’s a kit build, scratchbuild or just a repaint or weathering, get in touch for a personal proposal using the form on the website, Facebook or the forum messaging. In the meantime, more soon...
