Bagnall - a prototype kit and a prototype for new batch production...

This is exciting, a new prototype kit, a private commission that will later become a Planet Industrials limited release towards the end of the year, the unusual Bagnall 0-6-0...

With no drawings and only photographs initially to work from, this seemed to be a bit of a struggle - but I started with drawing up the Bachmann Class 03 chassis to start from and then mocked up a 'guesstimate' based on some known dimensions. It turned out that when furnished with a little more information and a drawing of the long wheelbase version I wasn't too far off the mark.

The model follows my usual design, but is now totally sourced within the UK. The 3D print will need some adjustment for production kits, but the finish is very neat indeed and a perfect fit on the chassis. I can't wait to add details, handrails etc and get some primer on this first model to see it come to life.

This will be the first in a new production methodology for Planet Industrials kits - each model will be produced in a single batch and once sold out is unlikely to be repeated. This will allow me to focus on new products rather than keeping an extensive stock of old kits and the hassle with re-stocking. The basic 'cab conversions' will continue to be available in a more limited range - but from now on the larger kits will be batch production - probably between 20 and 50 depending on our predictions on popularity.

Look out for more on this model - and some more locomotives I have in mind for ready to run chassis in the weeks and months ahead. If you'd like me to build one for you, then get in touch for a guaranteed kit from the production run - otherwise, sign up to the Planet Industrials Facebook page and email for notification as they become available on general sale. Until next time, more soon...

  1. Hi James

The early version of the Bagnall looks real good and especially for me without buffers and fitted with KD's.

You may have an export market here as the first full sized prototype was supplied to Tasman Pulp and Paper in NZ ( 3'6" gauge ) followed by two for Wilsons Portland Cement and a batch for NZ Railways (their DSa class). Some DSa's went into industry in New Zealand and one was working at the Karioi pulp mill in at least up to 2017. Later versions were as you know for the NCB

I might be interested in an export version

    Best regards

    Alan
