Mosslanda: Denton Road - baseboard and light…

Over the weekend the white cardboard mock-up has been transformed into an almost trademark stage carpentry wooden cameo box…

I tend to have the basics in stock so a DIN plug and 2.1mm panel socket have been added quickly to supply power and control. The basic composition is exactly as the cardboard model, the window has been increased in height a touch, so that the distance from trackbed to top of box is similar to Wrecsam. In time I will use the clear Tamiya blue paint to alter the colour temperature.

I need to add a 12v ‘bus’ along the layout next as I intend to add a platform start signal along with a smattering if lighting. Track isn’t down yet because I’ve not decided how to build the fiddle stick/sticks, and hence transfer power from the layout to the sticks. If I was using Peco Code 55 this would be a breeze but I plan to use the British Finescale code 40, at least on the visible section.

However, despite the long way still to go placing a few items of stock on the structure fills me with excitement. Half a squint and I can begin to fill in the details, to imagine being on board a train crossing the viaduct and bridges on my approach to the station, almost head the wheel squealing and feel the slow speed along aging track, through speed restrictions and towards the destination. Follow along using the labels below to find other installments in this latest adventure. Until next time, more soon…

  1. I've been giving some thought to recreating my favourite section of the Festiniog Railway, Tan-y-Grisiau to Glan-y-Pwll, in a Mosslanda or two. The narrow right of way perched on a ledge, and spectacular scenery should be perfect for the IKEA product. The bridge over the Cwmorthin Road would be a must, so I will be interested to see how you work with the raised track and road bridge.

    1. I'm not sold on Mosslanda for larger scales yet Ian - I think in N it gives just enough depth, but in 4mm it makes very shallow scenes. My 009 Ffestiniog themed box is 60x22cm, and that works quite nicely.

My plan for the road and canal will be to build them in styrene and 'slot them in' like I did with the 'Fancy Another Beer' project. I don't think they need to be removable in the same way, but it allows painting and detailing off the layout.
